As a travel and entertainment journalist, I am spoiled. I have stayed at some of the world’s finest hotels, from beach front pool villas in tropical resorts to urban properties in the hearts of cities including Montreal, New York, Dallas, Honolulu, Bangkok, Phuket and on this occasion, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Often, I’m a hosted guest of the hotel, or because I’ve been invited in my capacity as an…

On World Animal Day, 3 October 2010, a march and rally was held in which activists from all of Indonesia gathered to take a stand for animal rights, calling for an end to animal trade and smuggling in Indonesia. As organizers explained, a primary ongoing goal is "to alert people to the suffering of animals sold in the animal markets daily, and those that are suffering at the hands of cruel entertainment."
Punctuating the need for…

Iraqi activist Ali Hili
(This story originally published in print in April 2010, and republished online in September 2010)For members of the LGBTQ community in many parts of the world it is the beginning of pride season, but tragically it is apparently hunting season for LGBTQ people in Iraq, as in they are the…

If you met Stuart Koe on a dance floor you could assume he might be a personal trainer, a bartender, a fashion model—these are the obvious choices based upon first glance. When first visiting Fridae.com, one of the world’s leading LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, queer) web sites, you might initially think it’s all about dating. Truth be told, Stuart is not only a Doctor of Pharmacy in HIV medicine, but the entrepreneur behind…

Deeply privileged—that’s a how I describe myself at having a single opportunity to interact with a spiritual superstar like Venus Perez (my words, not hers), let alone chronicle the lives of such extraordinary individuals on a regular basis in this column. And deeply privileged—that’s how you will feel as well by the end of this read!
Venus, a 45-year-old Latina who has been HIV positive for over two decades holds among her role…

Ram and Kevin Callen are as married as they can legally be in the United Kingdom (where they have Civil Unions), but the story of their lives and ultimate meeting is extraordinary. I came to meet them in cyberspace because of my own online outreach as an openly gay, openly HIV positive journalist and activist, and then in person when they recently vacationed in Thailand—but we start this story in India where Ram grew up.
As a…

I don’t believe any of us covering the red carpet arrivals for the
Brokeback Mountain premiere in Hollywood, November 11, 2005, had a clue that we would truly be a part of history, helping launch a movie that would transform the lives of countless people around the world because of its profound capturing of the cost of the closet. I had not yet seen the movie that I now hold as one of the most important…

Nicholas Snow's Notes From The World: Empowering Millions With Music
(This column was originally published in print in Southern California in December, 2009)
If this was the last day of your life and you knew this, what would you do differently? Do you have some sort of unexpressed truth? Have you wondered if perhaps your whole purpose for being on the planet is to express this truth? Wouldn’t it be a shame if…
